Curators in Conversation: Modigliani Up Close

This engaging conversation between the co-curators of Modigliani Up Close—Nancy Ireson and
Barbara Buckley from the Barnes, consultant curator Simonetta Fraquelli, and conservator
Annette King of Tate, London—marks the opening of this landmark exhibition at the Barnes.
Join the experts in person or online as they discuss Amedeo Modigliani’s unique style, working
methods, and materials.

First Friday! Shinjoo Cho & Asian Arts Initiative

Friday, November 4, 6–9 pm
Enjoy an evening of art, live music, cocktails, and light fare at our monthly First Friday mixer.
Tonight’s event, presented in partnership with Asian Arts Initiative, features bandoneonist,
pianist, and accordionist Shinjoo Cho with contemporary tango ensemble Oscuro Quintet. The
classically trained group mixes tango with jazz and traditional sounds to elevate the genre. This
dynamic evening is hosted by Anne Ishii, executive director of the Asian Arts Initiative. Includes
access to the collection galleries and Modigliani Up Close.

PECO Free First Sunday Family Day: Creative Process

Sunday, November 6, 10 am–5 pm
It’s the first Sunday of the month, which means free admission at the Barnes! This month, we’re
exploring creativity and inspiration with help from our partner Musicopia, a Philadelphia
nonprofit that helps provide music education and enrichment to students in pre-K through 12th
grades. Bring an instrument to donate, enjoy Balinese and Bollywood dance performances, and
learn more with our family activities. Plus, explore the collection in our main galleries and see
Modigliani Up Close.
Free; capacity is limited, registration is required and opens Thursday, November 3, at 10 am.

Young Professionals Night: Past/Forward

Friday, November 11, 7–10 pm
Step out in style to Young Professionals Night and help us celebrate the 100th anniversary of art,
education, and community at the Barnes. This evening’s beats are courtesy of DJ Lil’ Dave, and
the night includes a performance by singer-songwriter Brandon Pain. The final #BarnesYP of
2022 also celebrates the opening of Modigliani Up Close.

First Friday! Yolanda Wisher & The Afroeaters

Friday, December 2, 6–9 pm
Enjoy an evening of art, live music, film, cocktails, and light fare at our monthly First Friday
mixer. Tonight’s event features Yolanda Wisher & The Afroeaters, a dynamic band fronted by
the 2016 poet laureate of Philadelphia. Their debut album, Doublehanded Suite, is a blend of
jazz, blues, and Wisher’s spoken word soundscapes exploring works by Black writers that have
been lost or misunderstood. Includes access to the collection galleries and Modigliani Up Close.

celebrating the 100th anniversary of our founding and the tenth anniversary of our move to the
Parkway in Philadelphia. Find highlights of our history in the galleries, enjoy a contemporary
gospel performance by John Graves Productions, and learn more with our fun family activities.
Plus, explore the collection and our centennial exhibition Modigliani Up Close.

Online: Modigliani: A Life

Wednesdays, October 12–November 2, 1–3 pm
Join us for this book-club–style class held in the Barnes collection and special exhibition
galleries. Over the course of four weeks, students will read Meryle Secrest’s acclaimed biography
Modigliani: A Life (2011) before gathering for a group discussion in front of the actual paintings
led by art historian Matt Palczynski.

Exhibition Class: Modigliani Up Close

Thursdays, November 10–December 8, 1–3 pm
Join us for a very special course co-taught by the team of curators and conservators behind our
fall exhibition Modigliani Up Close. This much-anticipated exhibition is the first to look closely
at Modigliani’s materials and working methods and is a major step forward in our
understanding of the artist.

Private Exhibition Tours: Modigliani Up Close


Daily, beginning October 20
Led by a specially trained docent, this tour provides a close look at Amedeo Modigliani’s unique
style, working methods, and materials. Explore important pieces from museum collections
around the world and learn about the exciting research that is casting a new light on the artist’s
practice. This tour is a private one-hour experience for you and up to seven guests. Reservations
are required. Includes access to the collection before and after the tour.

Exhibition Tour: Modigliani Up Close

December Spotlight Tour: Modigliani and Soutine: A Surprising Friendship
Thursday–Monday, 1 pm

Each month, Spotlight Tours focus on a different artist or theme, allowing for a deeper dive into
specific areas of the collection. Known for his freewheeling bohemian lifestyle, Italian painter
Amedeo Modigliani developed a radical approach to painting the human figure inspired by
African sculpture. His friendship with struggling Lithuanian artist Chaïm Soutine began when
the two were living in Paris’s Montparnasse neighborhood. Learn about these two colorful
characters and their contributions to modern art. Includes access to the collection before and
after the tour.
